Complete Web Redesign For A Major Radio Station
After conducting successful research into how listeners viewed KSBJ and its properties, Idea (now Astadia) was hired for a complete redesign of KSBJ.org. KSBJ sought a totally updated, modern site that could play host to a variety of new content in addition to existing essentials.
Approach
I, together with an associate creative director, led the redesign process from start to development. We conducted the project in two phases:
Phase 1
Stakeholder interviews: I planned, designed, and executed 10 meetings with department heads and executives to gather business requirements.
Heuristic Evaluation and Competitive Analysis: I designed and executed a heuristic evaluation and competitive analysis of the existing KSBJ site and other similar stations. We focused on site elements related to the business requirements and requirements that emerged from our earlier survey and focus groups.
Phase 2
Focus Groups: I designed and executed another series of focus groups to inform our user experience and visual design directions. In addition to broad discussion, we asked participants to complete a card sorting exercise that helped us pick the right terminology for the site. They also completed a collaging exercise that helped us set the visual design direction.
Content Strategy: I oversaw the production of a content strategy by a freelance team member. We paid particular attention to making a document that the client could always refer back to as a guide for the new content they planned to create.
Information Architecture and Site Mapping: Based on insights from the focus groups, prior research, and the content strategy, we developed a clear sitemap and a set of guidelines for publishing content on different parts of the site.
Interaction Design: The associate creative director and I created wireframes for each major page on the site and various key site widgets in Axure.
Visual Design: The associate creative director took the lead on visual design, while I provided ongoing user experience input.
Development: Our development team took the lead on constructing the site, while I provided ongoing user experience input.
Impact
The redesigned KSBJ.org site launched to great acclaim from KSBJ staff and listeners.
